Sober coaching your toxic teen: an interactive guide for teaching parents and primary caregivers how to manage a drug crisis
Day by Day, Recovery Resources ,
Traditionally, professionals have offered treatment to the family of their young clients by saying the parent is "sick" and needs to be treated. the proof offered for this assessment is that the child has a drug or alcohol problem. But we know that alcoholism and addiction is a disease-- a brain chemistry disorder and it isn't caused by "bad" parenting. Any method that alienates parents (guilt and shame) and gives the young person someone to blame, Mom and Dad, is not going to work in the long run. That being said, parents certainly can make a situation better or worse. Dr. Marshall and his sister Shelly know this problem from personal experience and they teach parents and caregivers how to make it better. The Sober Coaching approach changes the negative to a positive by making Mom and Dad a part of the recovery team. Parents and other caregivers are the best line of defense for their young person if they are given the right tools. Feel good platitudes do not cut it when your child is at risk or in the midst of a drug crisis. Using parents as a Sober Coach unites practitioners and parents, carrying recovery principles back into the home environment without accusations. It is a win-win situation for all involved. This workbook tells parent, not what they want to hear, but what works in recovery. This workbook contains handouts, worksheets, phone lists, an intervention checklist among other very useful tools. Any parent going through the entire workbook will change the way they think about their child in trouble and the many ways they can help their young person.
